Podczas 67. posiedzenia posłowie zdecydowali o ustanowieniu patronów 2019 roku. Uhonorowani w ten sposób będą: Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Anna Walentynowicz, Stanisław Moniuszko, a także wydarzenia: Unia Lubelska i Powstania Śląskie.

"W 1569 r. w obecności króla Polski, wielkiego księcia litewskiego Zygmunta Augusta na sejmie walnym w Lublinie został podpisany akt realnej unii polsko-litewskiej. Dwa państwa: Korona Królestwa Polskiego i Wielkie Księstwo Litewskie powołały tym aktem ,,jedno nierozdzielne i nieróżne ciało" - Rzeczpospolitą Obojga Narodów. Przetrwała ona ponad 200 lat, a unicestwiły ją dopiero połączone siły trzech zaborców" - czytamy w uchwale.

Jak przypomniano w uchwale: „Losy i twórczość Gustawa Herlinga Grudzińskiego stanowią świadectwo cierpień i czynów człowieka, któremu przyszło przeżyć czasy totalitarnej przemocy i kryzysu wartości”.

Anna Walentynowicz została kolejną patronką roku 2019. 15 sierpnia 2019 r. przypada 90. rocznica urodzin tej wybitnej działaczki niepodległościowej Wolnych Związków Zawodowych i współtwórczyni Niezależnego Samorządnego Związku Zawodowego „Solidarność”.

Patrons of the Year 2019 - the Sejm's decision

During the Sejm's 67th Sitting, the MPs decided to establish the national patrons for the Year 2019, honoring in this way the persons of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, Anna Walentynowicz and Stanisław Moniuszko, as well as the historic events of the Union of Lublin and the Silesian Uprisings.

"In 1569, in the presence of the Polish King, Grand Duke of Lithuania, Zygmunt August (Sigismund Augustus), an Act of the Real Polish-Lithuanian Union was signed in the General Seym forum in Lublin. The two states: The Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania thus established "a single inseparable and undivided polity" of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Union survived for over 200 years, and it was only the combined forces of the three alien partitioning powers that destroyed it," reads the Sejm's resolution, emphasizing that the Union was one of the most significant events of the century, not only for the merging countries, but for all Central-Eastern Europe.

Gustaw Herling-Grudziński has also been chosen as the patron of the Year 2019. The 20th of May 2019 will mark 100 years since the birth of one of the greatest Polish writers of the 20th century. As the Sejm resolution recalls: "The destiny and creative achievement of Gustaw Herling-Grudzinski are a testimony to the suffering and deeds of a man who had to survive the times of totalitarian violence and of the crisis of values."

In 2019, the anniversaries of the Silesian Uprisings will also be marked. The Sejm expressed its "gratitude for the contribution made by the generations of the Silesian people to the struggle for the Republic of Poland's independence and reconstruction, and to making a significant impact on the shape of the borders of a reborn and independent Polish state."

Anna Walentynowicz also became the patroness of the Year 2019. August 15th, 2019 will be the 90th birth anniversary of that prominent independence activist of the Free Trade Unions and co-founder of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union "Solidarność" (Solidarity). "In recognition of Anna Walentynowicz's merits for the creation of the great Solidarity movement and regaining of independence by Poland, and to pay tribute to her unwavering stance, the Sejm declares 2019 as the Year of Anna Walentynowicz" - states the resolution.

The Sejm also decided to declare 2019 the Year of Stanisław Moniuszko, to coincide with the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the composer, conductor, organist, educator, director of the Grand Theater in Warsaw, and the founder of the Polish national opera. The MPs stressed in the document that Stanisław Moniuszko was the model of a Polish patriot. "The composer's works to this day are an inspiration for many artists, while in his time they endowed the Poles with a range of colors to express the finest shades of their patriotic feelings and national identity."
